What Is a Serial Number? Its Role in Apple Warranty Checks

A serial number is the manufacturer's identity code. Structure varies by brand. Apple uses it to link the model, activation date and coverage.

An IMEI follows the cellular standard (usually 15 digits). A serial is brand-defined and can mix letters and numbers. MacBooks, Wi‑Fi iPads and AirPods usually only have a serial.

• iPhone/iPad: Settings → General → About.
• Mac: Apple menu → About This Mac.
• Watch: Settings on the Watch or the Watch app on iPhone.
• AirPods: inside the charging-case lid or Settings → Bluetooth.
