Activation Lock vs iCloud Lock

In buying and selling, Activation Lock and iCloud Lock are often used interchangeably for the Apple ID lock tied to Find My. Apple's official term is Activation Lock.

A device can be activated (warranty date on Coverage) and still be Activation Locked. Conversely, an unactivated device can already be locked if it was previously set up with Find My and then erased.

1. Ask the owner to sign out of iCloud / turn off Find My.
2. Erase and try Setup — an old Apple ID prompt means it is locked.
3. Do not buy a device showing a Lost Mode message.

Check Coverage / BatchIMEI report activation and warranty by serial. They do not read Find My status. Keep the two checks separate: (1) Coverage, (2) account lock.

1. Decide whether you need an IMEI or a serial.
2. Pick the right lookup (Apple Coverage vs carrier vs Find My).
3. Match model/box before concluding.
4. For lots: export Excel and bulk-check.

When pricing used devices: Coverage shows remaining warranty days; Activation Lock decides whether the unit is usable after erase; blacklist (if your market uses one) decides cellular attach. These layers do not replace each other.

These two concepts are often mixed up in deals. Keep the definitions straight and you will pick the right code and read results correctly.
