What Is a MEID? How It Differs from an IMEI on Apple Devices

A MEID (Mobile Equipment Identifier) is a device identity used on CDMA networks. It is usually 14 hexadecimal characters, unlike a 15-digit decimal IMEI. Some older iPhones (especially US models) show both a MEID and an IMEI.

• IMEI: GSM/LTE/5G standard, 15 digits, Luhn check digit.
• MEID: CDMA standard, 14 hexadecimal characters.
• Both identify a device, but lookup sources and carriers differ.

Mostly when working with older CDMA devices or when a carrier specifically asks for the MEID. For Apple warranty / activation checks, use the serial number.

Prefer the serial for Apple Check Coverage; use the IMEI to cross-check Settings and the box; only use the MEID when the counterparty asks for it.
