What Is an ESN?

An ESN is an electronic serial number used on early CDMA networks. Its format differs from an IMEI. On modern devices it almost never appears in Settings.

Mobile identity evolved from ESN to MEID (expanded CDMA) and then largely converged on IMEI for LTE/5G. Older documents may still mention ESN even when a modern phone does not have one.

Very old CDMA phones, legacy carrier docs, or inherited intake forms. If a form asks for an ESN but the phone only shows IMEI/serial, ask which code is accepted.

For current iPhone/iPad/Mac units, prefer the serial for Check Coverage and the IMEI for cross-checking. An ESN is not used for Apple warranty lookups.

A common mistake is calling a device “clean” just because Coverage returns OK. Coverage does not replace an on-device Activation Lock check, and it does not report carrier blacklists. Separate layers reduce the risk of taking unsellable units.
